Federated International GemLab SA or “FIG” is a private entity established for the purpose of providing the best quality services for gemstones testing. FIG uses the best and most modern equipment together with all known sources of gemstones databases under the supervision of qualified gemologists in the field to provide customers with accurate testing results in terms of identification, treatment and origin of gemstones.
FIG closely cooperates and associates with the International Colored Gemstone Association or “ICA”, a non-profit organization based in New York city and Hong Kong. ICA is the only worldwide body specifically created to benefit the global colored gemstone industry. ICA was founded in 1984 and now comprises over 600 members across 47 countries devoted to advancing and promoting the knowledge and appreciation of colored gemstones. ICA members choosing to use FIG’s services enjoy exclusive privileges.
FIG’s vision in the industry is threefold: integrity, excellence and precision.

Dr. Dietmar Schwarz
Dr. Dietmar Schwarz is a renowned colored stone gemologist and world-leading authority on emeralds. His career in gemology spans four decades with teaching and research activities on five continents. The main steps in his professional life are a professorship at the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais/ Brazil for more than 7 years, work as a gemologist and Research Manager at the Gubelin Gem Lab in Lucerne, Switzerland for more than 20 years, and a 3-year period as director at the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences (AIGS) in Bangkok, Thailand.
Dr. Schwarz has been involved in a great number of research projects and actively presents colored stone lectures, seminars and workshops at gem laboratories, trade associations and educational institutions in different countries. Currently, he is a part-time Professor at the Tongji University in Shanghai and a guest lecturer at the China University of Geosciences (Campus in Wuhan and Campus in Beijing).
Dr. Schwarz published the book, “Esmeralda” in 1987 while teaching at the UFOP in Ouro Preto, and is the author of the book “Geographic Origin Determination of Colored Gemstones”, published in 2012 by NGTC in Beijing. In addition, he has been a prolific author and co-author of numerous notable gemological research papers, particularly in the field of emeralds, but also on other colored gemstones.
Dr. Schwarz has joined FIG in Bangkok as research Manager.
Mrs. Sonia Cherchi
Mrs. Sonia Cherchi studied Geography and Geology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. After that she continued studying Gemology at the Gemological Association and Gem Testing Laboratory of Great Britain (GAGTL) and achieved her diploma on 2003.
Mrs. Cherchi worked at Gubelin Gem Lab Ltd., Lucerne as a Head of Client Services and Senior Gemologist from 2004 to 2017. Currently, Mrs. Cherchi joins FIG as a Senior Gemologist – At – Large.
Miss Pantaree Lomthong
Miss Pantaree Lomthong graduated from Faculty of Earth Science, Kasetsart and Chulalongkorn Universities. She also obtained her Graduated Gemologist (G.G.) diploma. She has experiences in researching and testing of various varieties of color stones. Currently, Pantaree joins FIG as a Senior Gemologist.
